THIS year’s Melksham Carnival route has been shortened, so take note of the changes so you can make sure you don’t miss the procession.
After careful consideration, Melksham Carnival Committee has decided to shorten the route the procession will take this year.
The procession wil leave Cooper-Avon Car Park travelling through Bath Road and Bank Street before turning left into Lowbourne, then right into Ruskin Avenue and joining Pembroke Road. It will then turn right into Coronation Road before turning right into Spa Road. The procession will then continue down the High Street to return to Cooper-Avon Car Park via Bath Street and Bath Road.
Press officer, Christine York said, “We have always been aware of the amazing effort the groups and individuals put in to maintain their performances around the whole route and how exhausted they are when they return to the finish, especially the tiny tots who are part of the dance groups and baton twirlers etc. With this in mind, the committee felt it was time to rethink the route and have removed the least used roads. We feel confident this will make for a much better show.
“Please have a look at our new proposed route to decide on your favourite viewing point.
“Melksham Carnival covers approximately 1.7 miles and can take up to two hours to complete. To help the more energetic entries, Coronation Road has been designated an optional rest point where performance entries such as dancers, twirlers etc. will be allowed to walk rather than perform if they wish to take a breather.”
This year’s carnival will take place on Saturday 22nd July and following the success of last year, the Family Fun Day will take place prior to the carnival procession at the King George V Playing Field.
“We are really looking forward to the Family Fun Day and we would love to see as many people there as possible. This year we decided to hold the Melksham’s Bonniest Baby competition at the Family Fun Day. We’ll have a special marquee up and great prizes for the winners.
“We’re really excited about this year’s event in the park; we’ve got so much going on. There will be an array of stalls, face painters, tug of war competitions, carnival royalty, charity stalls, ice cream trucks, plus refreshments. Also new to this year’s event, we have a brass band and a fun dog show. You are also welcome to bring your own picnic.
“If you would like to have a stall then please do get in touch with us as soon as possible because we expect spaces to go quickly.
“The day might be a couple of months away but we advise people to let us know if they would like to take part in the procession as soon as possible.
“Please have a look at the carnival website for details – www.melkshamcarnival.co.uk
“Then after the Fun Day, head down to the town and find a good spot to watch the carnival procession.
“Entries are open for the carnival procession so if you would like to have a float, download a form off our website. The carnival procession is an excellent way to highlight your business, charity or organisation.
“Even if you are an individual, don’t be shy, you will be most welcome to come and join in the fun!”
Please note, on carnival day, the roads will be closed on a rolling closure basis between 5.30-8pm.
