MELKSHAM woman, Nic Clyde, is planning to take on the national Three Peaks Challenge this year, climbing the highest peaks in England, Scotland and Wales, Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon, in 24 hours; and she isn’t letting a broken wrist get in her way.
Nic, from the Cobblers Bench in Melksham, is raising money for two charities which help parents following the loss of a child. She will be part of a group of 30 people, led by Tom Robson, who are taking on the challenge in June. The money raised by the group will be donated to Teddy’s Wish baby loss charity and the Forget Me Not bereavement suite, which is self-funded, at Bath RUH.
Tom and his wife, Harriet, had a daughter, Eden Rose, who was stillborn on 25th November 2021. Both the charities supported Tom and Harriet, who is a hairdresser at Bliss Hair Salon, in Church Street.
Looking ahead to the event, Nic said, “It’s going to be hard, but I am really looking forward to the challenge! I am going to be doing lots of walking and keeping fit between now and then.”
In December, the group had their first training session and climbed Pen y Fan in South Wales. At the end of the walk, Nic fell in the car park and broke her wrist. She said, “I couldn’t believe it! I had done all of that, we’d had a really good walk and then I injured myself. A broken wrist means I have been a bit limited as to what I can do, but I am hoping to be able to join the next training walk in the middle of this month. We will have to do some of the challenge walking in the dark, so we’ll need to get some practice in with doing that too.
“I am a member of the Forest Fitness running group in Melksham and regularly run. I have done events before like the Bath Half Marathon, but never anything like this. I keep speaking to people who have done the three peaks challenge before and they tell me how much I will love it.
“There will be two minibuses driving us to each location and I think that’s when we will be able to nap and eat!”
The morning after the three peaks challenge, Tom and some members of the group, plan to cycle home, extending the challenge to cycling 200 miles from Snowdon in northwest Wales, to Wiltshire.
The group hope that raising money in Eden Rose’s name for Teddy’s Wish and the Forget Me Not suite will allow both charities to continue helping other families.
