As it enters its third year, the Melksham Community Support project continues to provide vital help to older people across the local area, offering practical support, advice and companionship during times of hardship and change.
The initiative is a collaborative partnership between Age UK Wiltshire, Melksham Without Parish Council and Melksham Town Council, and was launched in 2022 to help older people live more independently and feel better connected with their communities.
At the heart of the project is Sarah Thomson, Melksham Community Support Senior Project Worker, who has now supported over 170 people through friendly, personalised visits, either at home or somewhere comfortable for them. These holistic conversations often lead to practical outcomes such as applying for benefits, accessing health and care services, or simply connecting with local activities and groups.
“I have been awarded the higher rate of Attendance Allowance. This has made such a huge difference to me. Now I do not need to worry anymore,” said one of the people who has received support through the project.
Another person added, “I am now going to a weekly meeting and it is wonderful being part of a group again. We enjoy each other’s company and do lots of laughing.”
The project also helps people overcome loneliness and isolation by encouraging greater community participation.
One person said, “Who knew there was so much help and support out there? It is quite amazing. Thank you for sharing this with me. I don’t feel so alone now.”
Sarah said, “Many people contact us when they’re facing big life changes; a bereavement, a move, or an increase in care needs. Just having someone to talk things through with can be so valuable. From putting more money into people’s pockets to helping reduce the risk of falls, this service offers a wide spectrum of support. Our aim is to help people to live independently for longer and to overcome the barriers to live well in later life.”
In addition to one-to-one support, volunteers play a key role in helping with prescription and shopping collections, companionship, and getting people out and about.
“Our volunteers are the heartbeat of this service,” said Sarah. “We are always looking for more local people to join us in making a real difference in someone’s life.”
