MELKSHAM Country Dancers have celebrated their 75th anniversary.
“The group celebrated this major milestone by inviting as many former dancers as possible to a special evening where a great time was had renewing friendships, reminiscing over times past, viewing the archives laid on display and of course, dancing,” says president of the club, Geoff Elwell.
“It was in September of 1948 that Melksham Country Dancers was initially formed. It was a time of folk revival around the country and folk clubs of all descriptions were being set up, Melksham of course being no exception.
“Through the years the club has organised and ran 40 annual Children’s Days of Dance at the Melksham Assembly Hall, no doubt some reading this will recall having attended these events themselves whilst at junior school in the area.
“Annual dances were also held for more than 40 years, often at the Old George Ward School in Shurnhold. These dances were attended by dancers from all over Wiltshire and beyond.
“Day coach trips have often been run to other folk events or attractions to give members extra experiences, exercise and excitement.
“Although we have an active membership of over 30, we are always happy to welcome others to join us. Why not come along to one of our club nights and sample our hospitality and social contact all while getting some well needed exercise; it is great fun and you would be made very welcome.
“There are no special qualifications or equipment needed, you don’t need any prior experience and you don’t even need a partner, just come along and someone will be there to help you and to dance with you.
“On club nights, members are led through a wide range of dances by one of our three excellent resident callers, all while maintaining a warm and social atmosphere.
“The group aims to promote, encourage and, where necessary, teach the rudiments of English folk and country dancing to as wide an age group as possible for those over 16 years of age.”
