A long-established family business in Melksham is celebrating its 40th anniversary by going green in a big way.
The MOT Centre in Bowerhill and its sister site, Turnpike Garage on the Devizes Road, have recently undergone a major eco-friendly transformation, with the installation of more than 100 solar panels, battery storage systems, and LED lighting throughout both premises.
The investment is part of a wider project to reduce the company’s carbon footprint and keep costs down for customers and staff alike.
“Over the last couple of years, we’ve seen an incredible rise in costs – whether it’s business rates, insurance or energy bills,” said Ben Johnson, who runs the family business along with his three brothers Gary, Mark and Ian. “This is our way of making the business more efficient and sustainable, and making sure our customers benefit too.”
Established in 1985 by Alan and Mandy Johnson, The MOT Centre has become a trusted name in Melksham, known for its independent, family-run service. To mark the 40-year milestone, the family chose to reinvest in the business with a view to the future.
“With this upgrade, we’re not just cutting our energy usage and carbon footprint – we’re also aiming to reduce running costs, improve the working environment for our team, and ensure we’re still here serving Melksham for another 40 years,” said Ben.
Turnpike Garage has also undergone significant improvements in recent years, including the launch of a fully modernised 24/7 pay-at-pump fuel station. Customers can now fill up on petrol, diesel, super fuels, and AdBlue at any time of day without leaving their car or joining a queue.
“This setup is ideal for families with young children or pets, or anyone who wants a quick and easy refuelling experience,” added Ben. “It’s part of our effort to offer both convenience and competitive fuel prices, all while reducing our environmental impact.”
The family extended their thanks to local businesses involved in the transformation. Bodmans carried out the building work at The MOT Centre, while T&S Lux Electrical handled the full installation of the LED lights, solar panels, and battery systems.
“Jon and his team at T&S Lux Electrical were brilliant – they really understood what we needed, and delivered to a very high standard,” said Ben. “We’re delighted with the outcome – both sites are now much more efficient, and the upgrades have given the buildings a modern, fresh feel.”
The team at both The MOT Centre and Turnpike Garage expressed their gratitude to their loyal customers.
“Thank you to all our customers for your patience and understanding while work was carried out,” said Ben. “We hope these improvements show our commitment to the future – to being the best independent garage in Melksham, and to doing our bit for the environment.”
