Melksham’s Under-12s girls’ rugby team, the Melksham Fawns, hosted three teams from across the region for the Oakfields 10s Festival on Sunday 9th February.
The festival, held at Melksham RFC, featured over 60 players from teams in the Cotswolds, Barnstaple and Gillingham. The event was sponsored by local councillor Mike Sankey in memory of his mother.
Despite the cold weather, the Fawns performed well against strong opposition, winning two matches and drawing one.
Head coach Scott Simmons said, “It is so heartwarming, not just as the head coach of the Melksham Fawns but as a rugby fan with a teenage daughter, to see so many female players attending our tournaments at Melksham Rugby Club. The Fawns—both teams we have—had huge weekends. These girls, some of whom are new to the game, put such heart and effort in and really do leave it all on the pitch.
“My thanks to the other teams who attended and a big hand to Cllr Mike Sankey, who sponsored the event.”
