Melksham Baptist family bingo night to raise money for RUH

A FAMILY bingo night will take place at Melksham Baptist Church to raise money for The Forever Friends Appeal’s RUH Cancer Care Campaign. 

The event takes place on Saturday 15th March at 6.30pm with ‘eyes down’ at 7.00pm.

Chocolate prizes are to be won with the evening costing £5 for adults and £3.50 for children, which includes bingo tickets and refreshments.

  • Trampolinist, 92, and wildlife volunteer win BBC awards A 92-year-old trampolinist and a wildlife volunteer from Melksham have been recognised for their community contributions at the BBC Radio Wiltshire Make a Difference Awards. Trampolinist Peter Quinney and Wilts & Berks Canal Trust volunteer Howard Yardy both won awards at the ceremony at Blunsdon House Hotel, Swindon, on 5th September. Peter is a founding member of the former Christie Miller Gymnastics Club and has been involved in trampolining for more than 70 years. He still coaches the sport and won an individual over-90 gold medal and a team gold medal at the Portsmouth Gymnastics Adult Championships earlier this year.   • Love Melksham – A resident’s love letters to her town This week my love letter to Melksham is written in the warm, spicy surrounds of the wonderful Refa Tandoori. The delicious food and friendly atmosphere make it a great place to host visitors and I have enjoyed sharing this special experience with many friends and family members over the years. This evening I’m catching up with a friend here and within seconds of arriving through the door we are greeted with hugs by Hamza, our attentive and enthusiastic host, who seems to know the names, families and favourite dishes of everyone who walks through the door. Hamza is the youngest son of Gias and Lily Uddin, who arrived in Melksham in 1990. Inspired to share their love of Bangladeshi and Indian cuisine with the appreciative people of Melksham, Gias immediately set up a takeaway in the Market Place. Their first week was so busy they sold out by 8pm every night, and the next 36 years have seen the business develop and expand along with the appetite for their excellent food. When their neighbouring Blockbuster video shop closed in 2014, the Refa doubled in size with the new space and has remained busy and bustling since, including regularly sold-out Christmas days full of happy customers.   • Melksham architecture firm secures third major design award An architectural practice based in Melksham has won its third major industry award after being named design service of the year at a ceremony in Bristol. Macey’s Architectural Design & Development Ltd (MADD) received the honour at the Corporate LiveWire Global Awards held at Ashton Gate Stadium in June. Founded in 2024 by Ben Macey, the firm specialises in bespoke design, heritage refurbishments, new builds and extensions. Recent projects include the redevelopment of redundant buildings into mixed-use schemes, flood-resilient residential designs, and heritage-led refurbishments.   • Melksham Times Past A column about days gone by in Melksham by local historian Lisa Ellis The Avon Rubber Layout in 1900 With the current demolition of the former Avon India Rubber Co Ltd factory site, it might be worth noting what the grounds first looked like, with the help of the former chairman. In 1955, Robert Fleetwood Fuller recorded a history of the factory on the occasion of his 50th anniversary with the company. In that booklet was a diagram showing the original layout of the premises when they moved into their new location on Bath Road in 1900. His description: “The entrance was adjoining the Flour Mill with the dwelling house of Mr W Higham, Work’s Foreman, just outside the gates. The house had previously been occupied by Mr Margetson (who had recently moved to Beechfield, Beanacre) and was probably originally built in the 15th century, as shown by the Mural painting found behind the 18th century panelling. It was seriously damaged during the Melksham riots of 1739, but restored by Henry Couldhurst whose initials, with the date of 1746, still appear on the water pipes.   • Fond farewell to surgery receptionist after 35 years A dedicated receptionist at Giffords Surgery has retired after more than three decades, with the surgery naming a room in recognition of her hard work. Debbie Gaisford retired on Monday 17th August after 35 years of dedicated service to the surgery, having joined in 1991. To celebrate Debbie’s work, the practice has named its meeting room ‘The Gaisford Room’ as a lasting recognition of her contribution. Managing Partner Emma Fletcher said, “Debbie is our longest-serving employee, having dedicated much of her working life to caring for patients and supporting the practice. Her commitment, loyalty and wealth of experience have been greatly appreciated by everyone at the practice. Debbie has seen many changes in primary care over her 35 years but throughout she has remained a constant and familiar face to generations of patients and colleagues.” Read more on our website, the link is in our bio.   • Day trip to the seaside for Friendship Café Members from Melksham’s Shine Friendship Café, which caters for adults with learning disabilities, have enjoyed a day trip to Weston-super-Mare thanks to a community rail group. A total of 24 members took part in the trip, organised by TransWilts and Great Western Railway (GWR). For many it was their first trip on a train, and it is hoped it will give them the confidence to make more journeys in the future. The group joined a service at Chippenham for the hour-long journey to Weston-super-Mare. As well as taking in the scenery as they headed west, they also took part in a general knowledge quiz based on facts about the coastal town. Once at their destination, they made the short walk to the seafront and spent time on the beach, looking around the souvenir shops and enjoying fish and chips.   • First consultation on new Wiltshire Local Plan Residents, businesses and other organisations will have their first opportunity to help shape a new Wiltshire Local Plan next month. The consultation will be the first formal stage in preparing a replacement for the council’s previous Local Plan, which was withdrawn from examination earlier this year after planning inspectors raised concerns about whether it provided enough housing land, relied too heavily on proposed new settlements and matched development with areas of demand. The withdrawal has raised concerns that, without an up-to-date Local Plan, developers could find it easier to bring forward housing proposals on sites that have not been allocated for development. There have also been concerns about the weight that can be given to existing neighbourhood plans when planning applications are considered. The new Local Plan will set out how and where development should take place across Wiltshire, including housing, employment, infrastructure and waste facilities.   • Line dancing group celebrates one year of community classes A group bringing people together through line dancing in Melksham is celebrating its first anniversary. Wild Ones Country Line Dancing runs classes in Melksham at Spencer’s Sport and Social Club, with other classes also running across Wiltshire. Organiser Hannah Rush, also known as Lady H, said, “Reaching our first anniversary feels like a huge milestone, particularly after navigating our first summer and the challenges that come with running community classes. We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who has walked through the doors, supported us and helped Wild Ones grow during its first year. “What started as a line dancing class has grown into a fantastic community of people of different ages and abilities.” Read more on our website, the link is in our bio.
