A TEAM of girls from Melksham have swapped their football boots for walking boots to raise money for a local charity.
The Melksham Town FC Under 10s girls’ team organised a 3.7-mile walk to show their support for Dorothy House Hospice Care and have already raised more than £1,000.
Team coach Lexi Czerwionka, who herself is only 17 years old, came up with the idea because they had a free weekend without any matches.
Lexi said, “I only started coaching the girls at the beginning of this season but they’re such a fantastic team, who really pull together during their training sessions and matches.
“I was really keen to help develop this amazing team spirit by encouraging them to work as a group to raise money for such a fantastic local cause.
“We voted on which charity we wanted to raise money for and Dorothy House came out on top, which is brilliant because we all know what amazing work they do.”
The group of 15 girls were joined by their friends and family, as well as their coaches, on the walk, which took place around Melksham on Saturday 24th February.
Not only had they collected sponsorship beforehand but they also took collection buckets on the walk to ask for donations from passersby.
“Everyone was so generous and supportive when we were walking through the town and it was really heartening to collect even more donations while we were out and about,” explained Lexi.
“We’re all so proud to know that thanks to our efforts, so much money has been raised to help Dorothy House in the amazing work they do.”
