Two young players from Melksham Rugby Club recently enjoyed a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ opportunity when they trained with England rugby legend Jonny Wilkinson CBE at a special skills session.
Nia and Eva, who play for the Melksham Fawns, recently went to Avitto’s Kick of Summer event at Bath Rugby Club’s training centre, where they had an exclusive opportunity to develop their skills and get advice from former England rugby player Jonny Wilkinson.
“Standing next to Jonny Wilkinson and having him share tips for kicking was amazing. His tips on kicking weren’t just about technique; they were about mindset and energy too. A memory I’ll never forget,” said Nia, 13.
The day involved an hour-long session including a warm-up, passing practice, a session focused on kicking drills, and fun activities to build both skills and confidence. There was also a special live conversation with Jonny Wilkinson, hosted by acclaimed sports broadcaster and journalist Jill Douglas, followed by a relaxed BBQ.
“It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience kicking with Jonny Wilkinson,” said Eva, 12.

Speaking at the event, Jonny Wilkinson said, “Today is about setting kids up with the ability to find out what they’re really capable of and make the most of every moment and the gifts that they’ve got.”
As a former England rugby player, Jonny Wilkinson is most notably famed for scoring the winning drop goal in the final seconds of the 2003 Rugby World Cup Final against Australia.
