MARATHON first-timer, Matthew Fenlon, joined thousands of runners across the world to take part in the virtual London Marathon.
On what would have been the postponed date of the marathon, Sunday 4th October, 45,000 people around the world, in 109 countries, were given 24-hours to complete 26.2 miles on a course of their choosing.
Matthew ran a 26.2 mile course, plotted between Bristol and Bath, in just over six hours, raising over £2,000 for Sense, the national charity that supports people with complex communication needs, including those who are deafblind.
“It was exciting to take part in a event that had participants all around the world taking part. It’s probably a one-off event never to happen again!” said Matthew. “I was nervous as I hadn’t trained as much as I wanted to because of the pandemic – but it was a lot of fun, despite the rain!”
The next London Marathon is scheduled to take place on 3rd October 2021 – and Matthew’s 2020 marathon place has been deferred to next year.
“The virtual London Marathon has definitely given me an insight into what the London Marathon will actually be like – so I’m looking forward to doing it next year. Perhaps I’ll do more training this time!”
