Melksham Oak Community School held a cooking competition for Year 6 students from various primary schools in the Melksham area on 9th July.
What this entailed was the children getting into small groups and cooking a two course meal for two with only a £5 budget. However the pressure was on as they had a panel of judges to impress! Head teacher Stephen Clark, Chef Pravin Nayar, Mayor Terri Welch, people service manager at ASDA Alex Frith and Community Colleague Claire Cordon were the spectators for the day and for all involved it was very enjoyable. Mayor Welch commented saying ‘I was delighted to be asked to judge the Super chef event, every entrant produced a well thought out menu and I was also impressed by the good nature of everybody who took part and their enthusiasm’.
Of course all of the students who took part did their schools proud but with every competition there had to be a winner. Scores were tight with only half a point separating them. In the end 1st prize went to Melissa Gould and Leah Webb from Forest and Sandridge closely followed by the second prize winners Ella Miles and Elle-Mia Snell from The Manor and 3rd prize was Oliver Spooner and Callum McMillan from Bowerhill School. Well done to everyone who took part!
The prizes were kindly donated by ASDA with £20 vouchers for 1st place, £10 vouchers for 2nd place and £5 vouchers for 3rd place.
The event organiser Stacey Scarff who is a Design and Technology teacher at MOCS said ‘this was a really enjoyable morning and wonderful to see the students so focused and working independently.’ Adding; ‘it is important to teach students about healthy diets in this climate’.
All in all a very healthy, enjoyable and inspiring day that will be remembered by all involved.
