ORGANISERS of the Royal British Legion’s poppy appeal in Melksham are thanking local people who have given so generously to the appeal, which is already at a record-breaking total.
Donations are still coming in, with the total reaching over £16,000 so far. The figure includes thousands of pounds raised through collection tins across the town. The remainder of the cash was raised through donations from organisations.
Kenneth Graham of the Royal British Legion said, “Subscriptions to poppy tins in shops, clubs and sellers have raised the highest amount ever.
“The total we have banked, so far, is £16,170 which is great news as it is already a record-breaking year. I think it’s down to a few more volunteers that have come on board with the Royal British Legion over the last few years and we have doubled what we raised in 2008 when figures were around the seven or eight thousand pound mark.
“Overall, it’s because of the generosity of the Melksham people and the community pulling together that raised this money and we are very grateful. Our thanks to all the sellers and helpers for this year.”
The Poppy Appeal is the Royal British Legion’s biggest fundraising campaign.
This year, they hope nationally to reach a national target of £37million and donations are welcome all year round.
