A Melksham primary school has been recognised for its commitment to arts, culture and creativity in education.
Forest and Sandridge Primary School has recently achieved the Gold Artsmark Award, celebrating its development of a more structured and intentional arts curriculum, particularly in the visual arts.
The school was praised for introducing a clear progression in sketchbooks from Early Years to Year 6, implementing whole-school themes, and placing a shared emphasis on significant artists.
In their feedback, assessors said, “Students now regularly have the chance to develop their technical abilities and reflect on their work. Cultural diversity and critical engagement with artists’ work are receiving more attention.
“These days supplement, rather than replace, classroom-based delivery and contribute positively to whole-school identity and pupil engagement. While curriculum intent is well articulated and visibly celebrated, this model is still developing into fully embedded practice. Curriculum delivery varies between art forms and phases, and further consolidation across music, drama and cross-curricular integration would help ensure long-term consistency and resilience beyond key staff.
“The school has also built a broad and inclusive range of creative experiences, including choir, dance festivals, theatre visits, woodwork in EYFS, and digital art. Pupils engage enthusiastically and demonstrate pride in their achievements.”
Teacher Evan Bridewell said, “We’ve managed to achieve gold level, which we are really proud of. It’s been achieved over the last few years through a focus on developing pupils’ skills and knowledge.”
