THE Melksham Branch of the Royal British Legion is launching its annual Poppy Appeal this month and is seeking volunteers to assist with this year’s campaign.
Poppies will be available in all local shops, pubs, and clubs from 24th October to 9th November. The team will also have tables in Waitrose, Sainsbury’s, Asda, Lidl and Aldi supermarkets for the purchase of poppies, 2024 lapel badges, plain and regimental crosses, and many other Poppy Appeal items.
President Trevor Paterson said, “As in previous years, we will be looking for volunteers to man our tables, alongside branch members. You can volunteer for as many hours or days as you can manage, and choose which store is convenient for you to attend.
“This year, like last year, we will be using contactless terminals as well as cash donations; these are very user-friendly. We are hoping to beat last year’s total of £29,300.”
This year’s Remembrance Parade is due to be held on Sunday 10th November. It will start in the morning from King Street Car Park to arrive at the Cenotaph in time for the two minutes’ silence at 11am. There will be a short service, followed by the wreath-laying and then marching back to the King Street Car Park.
For those wishing to attend church, there will be a Remembrance service in St Michael’s Church at 10am.
“Could organisations, schools, or private individuals who would like to lay a wreath during the wreath-laying please contact me, as I have plenty in my store,” says Trevor.
There will also be a short service at the Cenotaph on Monday 11th November at 11am.
Trevor said, “We are always looking for new members to join the branch. We meet in the Foresters Arms on the second-last Tuesday of every month at 7pm.”
If you would like to volunteer to assist with collections in the supermarkets, please contact Trevor on his mobile 07884 050097, or email trevorpaterson747@hotmail.com.
