The Melksham Remembers volunteers are gearing up for the project’s exhibition taking place at Melksham Town Hall on 10th and 11th November.
At the exhibition they will be sharing what they have learned about life in the Melksham community area during the First World War.
Project coordinator, Beth Thomas says, “One story we have enjoyed is the Royal visit to Melksham on 9th November 1917. The visit was part of a West Country tour by King George V and Queen Mary.
“They arrived on the royal train at Trowbridge and drove speedily through Semington and on to the Avon India Rubber Works (now Cooper Tires) and then on to the Spencer Factory (now the location of Aldi and McDonald’s).
“The King and Queen met local dignitaries and toured both factories. Come along to the exhibition to find out more about the visit, what was made in the factories and how the local children were given the day off school to greet the royal couple.
“The free exhibition is open on Saturday 10th November from 12noon – 4pm, when the Wiltshire Scrapstore will be on hand until 3pm with First World War-themed activities.
“On Sunday 11th November the exhibition will be open from 10am – 2pm. Why not drop in before or after the town’s Act of Remembrance at the war memorial at 11am?”
