Melksham ‘sews together’ for virus frontline workers

OVER 1,100 personal protection items, such as face masks, have been hand-made by local group Melksham Sews Together, and donated to frontline staff and key workers in the area to help keep them safe during the pandemic.

The group was set up by Berryfield resident Stevie Cooke in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, and gained huge support from the community, with donations of materials. Around 60 local sewers and knitters then worked together to produce the items needed.

However, despite lockdown restrictions easing, the group is continuing with its efforts and is appealing for more people to get involved.

Stevie said, “I would like to say thank you from Melksham Sews Together. Some of the items sewn and donated to local front line workers to date include 470 laundry bags, 80 sets of scrubs, 12 scrub tops, 240 masks, 105 hats, 120 ear savers,  and 127 pinnies – helping schools, shops, care homes, doctors’ surgeries, community carers, dentists, vets, and community volunteers.

“Are there any sewers, knitters, crocheters out there that would be able to help sew pinnies, masks, knit teddy bears, and crotchet ear savers? We need you! We know and understand people are returning to work, so we are losing some of our sewers. If you are able to help, please go to Melksham Sews Together on Facebook. 

“We are also asking if you are a frontline worker or know of someone working on the frontline that needs something, please contact Melksham Sews Together and we will make every effort to get it to them. This is not just for those working in the NHS, This is for all frontline workers.”
