The Melksham Shed is celebrating its tenth anniversary as a community space for men to meet, socialise and engage in practical activities. A special anniversary event to mark the occasion was held last week.
A men’s shed provides a space for men to connect, participate in DIY projects and share skills. The initiative aims to support men’s mental health and reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness.
The anniversary celebration took place on Thursday 17th October at the Forest Community Centre and included participation from shed groups across Wiltshire. It featured activities, discussion forums and live music. Notable attendees included Patrick Wintour, the Deputy Lieutenant of Wiltshire, and Sarah Troughton, the Lord Lieutenant of Wiltshire.
The concept of men’s sheds originated in Australia, where research indicated that many retired men experienced feelings of isolation and a lack of purpose.
Chris Pickett, the founder of the Melksham Shed, stated, “It’s very important for men’s mental welfare. People have different problems at home and need somewhere to go.”
The history of the Melksham Shed began when Chris Pickett relocated from Hampshire to Wiltshire and discovered that the only similar facility in the West Country was located in Frome. This prompted Chris and a group of eight men to establish a small shed at the Forest Community Centre.
Within two years, the number of participants grew significantly, necessitating a move to a larger space, where the Shed currently operates.
Today, over 30 members are registered with the Melksham Shed. Chris said, “New friendships have been formed, and many projects—both personal and community-focused—have been undertaken.
“In addition to those who have become registered members, several others have visited and enjoyed their time here, even if they felt it wasn’t for them. This is absolutely fine; they are just as welcome as those who stay longer.
“If you would like to come to the Shed, feel free to drop by any Monday, Wednesday or Friday morning. Have a coffee and a chat. Afterwards, if you want to stay and join our group, you will be most welcome,” Chris added.
