Melksham and District French Twinning Association has received a heartfelt thank you from the Maire of Avon for their support and condolences following the terrorist attacks in Paris on the 7th January this year.
Recognising the proximity of the attacks to Melksham’s twin town, the town council wrote to the Maire of Avon, Charlotte Nouhaud, to express their deepest sympathies to those concerned and to inform them that out of respects for those killed or injured and their friends and families, the French Tricolour would be flown at half mast from the Town Hall.
The Maire of Avon wrote to Melksham Town Council, “I was very sensitive and particulary moved in the reading of your mail, expressing your profound sadness as well as the expression of the population of Melksham’s sympathy after the Paris tragic terrorist attacks of Jan 7th.
“Your warm letter is for us, is a important support because it proves in these difficult days, the strong solidarity and community around universal values and the importance of developing the friendship and the mutual respect between the citizens of Melksham and Avon.
“The tricolour at half mast in the matt of your city hall during these terrible events is indeed a strong symbol of your solidarity and your condolences, we feel an intense emotion of pride and are very honoured by it.”
Melksham town clerk, Steven Gray said, “The letter from the Maire of Avon reaffirms the close bond between our two towns and is testament to the efforts of the Melksham & District French Twinning Association who do so much to ensure the continuation of our twinning relationship and the abiding friendships that it provides.”
