MELKSHAM’S air cadets has resumed face to face activity at its base in Bowerhill and is looking for more cadets to join the squadron.
Flight Lieutenant Greg McKay, who is the commanding officer of 2385 Squadron ATC, says, “Are you aged between 12 and 18 years? Are you up for fun, adventure, incredible experiences and making new friends? Looking for something to give you the edge in life? Then welcome to life as an RAF Air Cadet!
“The Royal Air Force Air Cadets offer young people the opportunity to partake in a wide variety of activities unavailable elsewhere. Air Cadets have the chance to take part in the following and more!
“Flying, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, drill, radio and comms, BTECs, leadership, shooting, fly in a fast jet, RAF station visits, military field skills, learn about aviation, parades, annual camps, first aid, gain qualifications, presentations skills, swimming, sports, and gliding.
“Cadets can join Melksham Squadron simply by first contacting: oc.2385@rafac.mod.gov.uk
“We will arrange an induction night for you to attend. New cadets must attend their induction night with a parent as there is a consent form to complete. We look forward to welcoming each of you to our squadron.”
The squadron parades every Wednesday and Friday from 7pm to 9.30pm at the squadron headquarters in Bowerhill (except over Christmas). Attendance is by subscription, set at £12 per month. This covers activities, uniform, insurances and all training materials.

Adult volunteers needed
The squadron is also looking for adult volunteers to assist them.
The squadron says, “Adult volunteer staff are the back bone of the RAF Air Cadets. They get involved in a wide range of activities, from being on the Squadron Civilian Committee, teaching cadets, running projects, facilitating adventure training, taking cadets flying, running Squadrons and being chaplains.
“All adult staff roles are voluntary but there are lots of opportunities for staff to gain experience, get qualifications, build confidence and be part of a large team who all look after each other.”
All staff volunteering with the Royal Air Force Air Cadets are DBS cleared, security checked and are first aid qualified.
