Melksham Times Past

Union Street c1905

A column about days gone by in Melksham by local historian Lisa Ellis

Best intentions: Children, parents, doctors

When I was about 12 and home alone, I was hungry and decided to make streaky bacon. My mother fastidiously saved bacon grease.

What I didn’t realise is that you have to cool the fat down first or it was going to burst the jar container under the intense heat, which I soon discovered when I carried the jar of filled, volcanically hot bacon grease across the room cradled by a heat-resistant pad only protecting my palms.

I can assure you that a burn is the highest form of pain there possibly could be. And when I read some of the historic newspaper articles about children and fire, I emotionally felt their pain.

“A painful incident followed a few hours later with fatal consequences occurred at Redstocks in the parish of Melksham Without, on Tuesday morning. A little girl named Violet Doris Perrett, between five and six years of age, during the temporary absence of her grandmother, with whom she lived, somehow got into contact with the fire, and before assistance could be rendered, was so severely burned that death resulted in the afternoon.” – Wiltshire Times, 16 January 1915

Violet was the daughter of Ellen (Perrett) Butler; father unknown. Ellen was living in Watson’s Court while her husband Herbert Butler was serving in the 1st Wilts Regiment. She’d last seen her daughter at Christmas. Violet’s grandmother, Mary Agnes (Brinkworth) Perrett, was severely deaf.

“Ignorant that their three-year-old daughter was being suffocated on a smouldering bed in a room above, Mr and Mrs Fred Kennelly of High Street Melksham (Wiltshire), remained downstairs until a neighbour gave the alarm. An electrical engineer, Mr F Ashworth, whose premises are at the back of the home of the dead girl’s parents, smelt something burning and saw smoke coming from the window of the child’s bedroom. Investigation revealed that the child, Mary, was on the bed beyond air, with the bed clothes almost completely smouldered away. It is thought that the child had been playing with matches, as there was no light in the room.” – Western Daily Press, Thursday, 14 August 1930

“It appears that on the morning of the 3rd January last, the deceased had risen and lighted the fire in her father’s house about seven o’clock, and she was blowing it to make the kettle boil, when a spark jumped out and ignited her dress, and she was soon in flames. Her screams brought her father and mother to her assistance, and they succeeded in extinguishing the flames, but not before she was dreadfully burnt.” – Wiltshire Independent, Thursday, 26 March 1863

Augusta Butler lived on Union Street with her father Thomas Goodman Butler, a court bailiff, locksmith and Melksham’s town crier, and stepmother Orphia Louisa (Mead) Butler.

She was baptised 25 days following the accident. After two months under the care of Dr George Plimmer of Church Street, her case was deemed hopeless and she was sent to Bath Hospital, dying two weeks later. She was 12 years old.

This was not the first case of a child’s death under the well-intentioned care of a physician. In the 1871 death of Harriet Maria Fowler, the nine-year-old daughter of MP Robert Fowler. Dr Edward Meeres of Place Road was treating the deceased for ringworm, which later turned out to have slowly poisoned her over time.

Of course, those were different times. And doctors meant well. Parents did too.

An advert in an 1869 edition of the Devizes Gazette offered advice to mothers: “Are you broken your rest by a sick child, suffering with the pain of cutting teeth; go at once to a chemist and get a bottle of Mrs Winslow’s Soothing Syrup. It will relieve the poor sufferer immediately; it is perfectly harmless; it produces natural quiet sleep, by relieving the child from pain, and the little cherub awakes ‘as bright as a button’. No mother should be without it.” It was also advertised for allaying all pain, regulating bowels and the best-known remedy for dysentery and diarrhoea.

At the time, the concoction was lauded. An early work by composer Edward Elgar in 1879, Harmony Music, contained a part made for a wind quintet titled “Mrs Winslow’s Soothing Syrup”.

However…

The elixir contained morphine and in 1911, Mrs. Winslow’s Soothing Syrup was incriminated in a publication titled “Nostrums and Quackery” which contained a section called “Baby Killers”. Nevertheless, the product was not withdrawn from sale until 1930.

  • Domestic abuser who assaulted Melksham woman jailed

A man who assaulted his partner, a woman in her 30s from Melksham, has been jailed for 19 months after admitting two assaults. Billy Conners, 26, formerly of Castle Road, Salisbury, appeared at Salisbury Crown Court on 27th July after pleading guilty to two counts of assault.

He was jailed for 19 months.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said, “In April, we received a call from the victim, a woman in her 30s from Melksham, reporting that she had been assaulted by Conners on multiple occasions, with whom she had been in a relationship with for only two months.

“On 30th March, Conners assaulted the victim by biting her and spitting on her, as well as repeatedly calling her derogatory names. Two days later, Conners accused the victim of messaging other people and pushed her to the floor.

“On April 2nd, Conners assaulted the victim again, kicking her to the head after pushing her to the floor, punched her in the ribs and face and again spat in her face.

  • Melksham charity launches £50,000 appeal to replace ageing bus

A transport charity which has been supporting residents for 30 years has launched a £50,000 appeal to replace one of its ageing buses.

Melksham Area Community Transport helps elderly residents get to the shops, children travel to school and community groups attend activities, providing accessible transport for those who struggle to use conventional public transport.

The charity launched the fundraiser earlier this month after one of its buses, which is 20 years old, reached the end of its working life.

With a fleet of six buses, the charity runs shopper buses taking residents to Devizes, Trowbridge and Chippenham on certain days, provides transport for schools, care homes, social clubs and community organisations, and operates daily school buses.

  • Play cafe thrives in heart of Melksham

An interactive play cafe in Melksham is celebrating its first six months after creating a popular space for children and parents to learn through play.

Mighty Minis Play Cafe, at Avonside, features themed role-play zones including a medical centre, theatre, construction area and salon.

It was created by three local mums – Sarah Hodges, Lisa Hargreaves and Ali Turrell – who saw a gap in Melksham for alternative facilities for children and parents.

Since opening in December, co-director Ali said there has been a real “community feel” about the space, with new children and parents continuing to visit alongside regulars who attend every week.

“Everyone has been really positive and really responsive,” said Ali. “There was clearly a need for it, which is lovely. It was something that we wanted to do for a long time.”

  • Assembly Hall attracts household names to Melksham

A new wave of nationally recognised acts are set to appear at Melksham Assembly Hall as the venue expands its entertainment programme while continuing to host community events.

The venue has strengthened links with promoters under new manager Robert Reay-Waugh, who took over earlier this year, helping secure a programme of household names alongside community events, weddings, parties and local groups.

Among the performers booked are Toyah, former Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon, comedian Dom Jolly, vocal quartet G4 and folk favourites The Wurzels.

The venue, in the Market Place, has hosted events since opening in 1847 and has previously welcomed major acts including Status Quo and Thin Lizzy.

  • Booking system to launch at Melksham recycling centre

Visitors to the Household Recycling Centre in Bowerhill will need to book appointments from September as part of a pilot scheme being introduced by Wiltshire Council.

The system is being piloted at six HRCs in Wiltshire to help reduce queuing, improve the customer experience and minimise disruption for nearby communities and businesses.

Residents will be able to make bookings from 8th September with visits by appointment only beginning on 14th September. Residents will initially be able to book a 30-minute slot up to one week in advance, with some same-day appointments available.

Wiltshire Council says the length of slots will be regularly reviewed to ensure there is maximum capacity available at sites.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Council said, “The new system is designed to make visits more convenient by helping to manage demand and reduce waiting times, particularly during busy periods.

  • Fundraising rugby quiz night for women’s team

A rugby-themed quiz night is being held at Melksham Rugby Club on Friday 14th August.

Hosted by Melksham’s women’s rugby team, the quiz starts at 7.30pm. Teams of two to four people can enter for £20.

Organisers say, “Think you know rugby? Or are you just really good at pretending you do after two pints? Perfect. Bring your ‘experts’, your guessers and your mate who once watched a Six Nations game and now thinks they’re a rugby genius. Scan the QR code, grab your squad, and come help us ‘Fill the Coach.’”

The event is part of a fundraising campaign to support the women’s team ahead of next season. There will also be a half-time raffle.

  • Wiltshire declared in drought as dry weather continues

Wiltshire has been declared as being in drought after weeks of hot, dry weather have left rivers, reservoirs and groundwater levels under pressure.

The county is among the areas covered by the Environment Agency’s Wessex drought area, which also includes Dorset, Somerset and south Gloucestershire.

The declaration comes after July saw just 7% of expected rainfall across England, falling to 1% across southern England.

  • Mum’s running challenge boosts 3G pitch fundraiser

A local mum has completed a 150km running challenge, raising more than £600 towards Melksham Town Football Club’s campaign for a new 3G pitch.

Dominika Paget ran 10km every other day throughout July, often in temperatures of up to 32C, to support the club’s efforts to purchase and install the pitch.

Her son, Harry, plays for the under-10s Typhoons. Dominika said poor winter conditions mean the team is often unable to play, highlighting the need for a dedicated 3G pitch.

She said, “At the moment Melksham Town are using the 3G pitch at Melksham Oak School but it is flooded all the time. Our children don’t play throughout the winter. You might get some spots in Chippenham or Devizes but it costs money to hire those as well. It just makes sense for Melksham Town to have one so we don’t have to go anywhere else.”
