A column about days gone by in Melksham by local historian Lisa Ellis

The Avon Rubber Layout in 1900

With the current demolition of the former Avon India Rubber Co Ltd factory site, it might be worth noting what the grounds first looked like, with the help of the former chairman.

In 1955, Robert Fleetwood Fuller recorded a history of the factory on the occasion of his 50th  anniversary with the company.

In that booklet was a diagram showing the original layout of the premises when they moved into their new location on Bath Road in 1900.

His description:

“The entrance was adjoining the Flour Mill with the dwelling house of Mr W Higham, Work’s Foreman, just outside the gates. The house had previously been occupied by Mr Margetson (who had recently moved to Beechfield, Beanacre) and was probably originally built in the 15th century, as shown by the Mural painting found behind the 18th century panelling. It was seriously damaged during the Melksham riots of 1739, but restored by Henry Couldhurst whose initials, with the date of 1746, still appear on the water pipes.

“Inside the Works Gate, on the right, No 10, was the Laboratory with the Director’s room on the first floor above.

“No 11 was the Timekeeper’s Office below, and General Office above extending over the archway. Mr J Wyatt was Timekeeper and Warehouse man, and Mr Clatworthy in charge of the office upstairs.

“Goods for despatch were packed in No 12a, outside which was a crane for loading on to the Railway wagon. Nos 12a and 12b on the ground floor were the General Mechanical Moulding Departments with a number of small presses and Drop Heaters, etc. On the floor above was the Pneumatic Tyre Shop.

“No 11a on the first floor, which was hung out over the river, propped up on two iron bars, was utilised as Mr Fuller’s office (George Pargiter Fuller, R F Fuller’s father), and the adjoining one by Mr Charlie Margetson, who was assisting in the Prime Cost.

“No 13 was a stable and coach-house, which housed Mr Margetson’s pony and trap.

“Nos 5,6, 7 and 8 were let to the Protene Company, but as this space was now required they were given notice to quit in 1900. (Protene gave up their premises in 1901 that they had occupied since 1898.)

“No 9 was a single-storey building used for store of waste rubber, etc.

“No 3 known as the old Factory, with the date of 1801 on the weathercock above, was used amongst other things for the making of Flexible Connections for Railways (corridor trains were then a comparatively new thing) and Compound Stores were on the ground floor.

“No 14 was a five-storey building, the three upper floors being used for a Drying Room and there was also a Drying Room over the Boiler House (No 17), while on the first floor Mr Tom Davis was in charge of Compounds and Batch Weighing. On the ground floor of No 14 were three Mixing Machines driven by the Spencer Engine in No 15. This engine had been installed in the days of the Cloth Factory.

“No 16 was the Washing Shop, No 16c the Spreading Shop and No 16a Fitters’ Shop.

“No 20 contained the Calendars, driven by a curious old Donkey Engine in No 19.

“No 18 was a little room used by Mr W Sydee, Jr, for mat punching.

“No 22 was the Long Shop, the 60-ft Hose Heater being along the far side, a 12-ft by 4-ft press for the Sheeting, etc., and an Open Cure Heater, for curing Admiralty Sheeting, were the main items of plant in this Shop. Vacuum Pipes were also made here.

“There was an Open Cure Heater in No 24, and a number of Cushion Tyre Moulds in No 21, but beyond this Shop was a rough garden with a Summer House and Mr Margetson also kept a boat which came in useful during floods.”

  • Water safety equipment installed along river

New water safety equipment has been installed along the River Avon in Melksham to help people respond to emergencies in the water.

Three rescue containers containing throwlines and other lifesaving equipment have been installed at locations along the river, including King George V Park.

The measures follow concerns raised last summer after the Adventure Centre helped rescue children who had got into difficulty in the river. The centre reported three near-miss incidents involving children playing in the water last year.

The equipment, installed by Melksham Town Council, was delivered following collaboration with several partners, including Wiltshire Search and Rescue and Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service, which provided specialist advice on the most appropriate equipment for the location.

  • Rain ends Melksham CC’s promotion hopes but 2nds and 3rds are crowned champions

Melksham CC’s 2026 season has now come to a close, with the club able to celebrate another fantastic league campaign which has seen their 1st XI finish third and both the 2nd and 3rd XI’s finish as league champions.

Unfortunately, the weather proved to be the decisive factor during the final weekend of the season, meaning that the 1st XI were denied the opportunity to go one better and seal a historic promotion to the West of England Premier League.

They headed into the final weekend, sitting in third place and just seven points off top spot, all set for a four-team shoot out from which only the top two would be able to claim promotion. The heavy rain however emphatically put an end to Melksham’s hopes, cancelling all fixtures in Division 1 and meaning that it was Bishops Cannings and Winsley who would end the day celebrating promotion.

The 2nd XI meanwhile, having already stormed to the league title with two games to spare, saw their final day clash with Avebury 3s also fall victim to the weather.

  • Melksham Police Update

It has been a busy few weeks for the Melksham Neighbourhood Policing Team, with the summer period bringing an increase in demand alongside the inevitable reduction in staffing as officers take annual leave.

Despite this, the team has continued to prioritise visibility across Melksham and the surrounding villages, balancing our commitment to community engagement with the operational demands we face.

We have enjoyed attending a number of community groups across the town, including the Chatty Café and Men’s Club, both held at Melksham Campus on Tuesdays. These sessions provide a great opportunity for us to meet local residents, listen to their concerns and have informal conversations about what matters to the community.

We were also delighted to welcome members of Steeple Ashton WI, who have very kindly created and knitted an amazing 25 trauma teddies for Wiltshire Police.

  • Trampolinist, 92, and wildlife volunteer win BBC awards

A 92-year-old trampolinist and a wildlife volunteer from Melksham have been recognised for their community contributions at the BBC Radio Wiltshire Make a Difference Awards.

Trampolinist Peter Quinney and Wilts & Berks Canal Trust volunteer Howard Yardy both won awards at the ceremony at Blunsdon House Hotel, Swindon, on 5th September.

Peter is a founding member of the former Christie Miller Gymnastics Club and has been involved in trampolining for more than 70 years.

He still coaches the sport and won an individual over-90 gold medal and a team gold medal at the Portsmouth Gymnastics Adult Championships earlier this year.

Peter received his award in the Active category.

  • Love Melksham – A resident’s love letters to her town

This week my love letter to Melksham is written in the warm, spicy surrounds of the wonderful Refa Tandoori.

The delicious food and friendly atmosphere make it a great place to host visitors and I have enjoyed sharing this special experience with many friends and family members over the years.

This evening I’m catching up with a friend here and within seconds of arriving through the door we are greeted with hugs by Hamza, our attentive and enthusiastic host, who seems to know the names, families and favourite dishes of everyone who walks through the door. Hamza is the youngest son of Gias and Lily Uddin, who arrived in Melksham in 1990. Inspired to share their love of Bangladeshi and Indian cuisine with the appreciative people of Melksham, Gias immediately set up a takeaway in the Market Place. Their first week was so busy they sold out by 8pm every night, and the next 36 years have seen the business develop and expand along with the appetite for their excellent food. When their neighbouring Blockbuster video shop closed in 2014, the Refa doubled in size with the new space and has remained busy and bustling since, including regularly sold-out Christmas days full of happy customers.
