A glow-in-the-dark march calling for safer streets for women will take place in the town centre next month.
The Free the Night event is being organised by charity FearFree in partnership with Melksham Town Council and drinks company Still Sisters. The march will also include live music and entertainment, adding to a party atmosphere that lights up the whole route.
Held on Friday 6th March, ahead of International Women’s Day, the event will begin at 6pm in the Market Place. The march will set off from Melksham Town Hall at around 6.30pm, following a group warm-up and speeches.
The 40-minute route will pass through the town centre and finish at King George V Park. Live performances from local groups and volunteers are planned along the way, with further details of the line-up to be announced.
The Mayor of Melksham, Saffi Rabey, said, “Free the Night is a fantastic opportunity for our community to come together and light up the town centre in support of safer streets for women in Melksham and beyond. As FearFree is one of my chosen charities, I am especially proud that Melksham Town Council is partnering with them to support such a powerful cause. I am really looking forward to marching alongside fellow supporters on the night and expressing our dedication to creating an equal world for women.”
Debbie Beadle, chief executive of FearFree, said, “From changing running routes to pretending to be on a phone call, women find themselves constantly adapting their behaviour just to feel safe in public spaces. This must change.
“Free the Night is a chance to take to the streets, express yourself, and stand together to call for an equal world for women.
“So, grab your glowsticks, your glitter, your friends and your family and join us as we Free the Night!”
The event is free to attend, but participants must register in advance online – https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/whats-on/wiltshire/melksham-town-hall/free-the-night/2026-03-06/18:00/t-yzaovkv – or at the Town Hall between 9am and 4pm, Monday to Friday.
Glitter tattoos and facepainting will be available on the night for a small charge.
Ahead of the march, a banner-making workshop will be held at Doubles Coffee, Pizza and Records on Saturday 28th February. More details can be found on the Fear Free and Melksham Town Council websites.
The route has been designed to be accessible for wheelchairs and prams. Those wishing to take part in a shorter section can join at designated points or meet at the park for entertainment and refreshments at the finish.
