Melksham has a new mayoral team for the year ahead, with Cllr Saffi Rabey appointed as town mayor and Cllr Jennie Westbrook named as her deputy.
The pair were selected at the full town council meeting on Monday 12th May, where Cllr Rabey pledged in her speech to serve the town with ‘dedication, integrity and a steadfast commitment to our shared future.’
Cllr Rabey joined the council in 2021 and served as deputy mayor last year. Cllr Westbrook joined the council in 2023 following a by-election and has recently been elected as a Wiltshire councillor.
At the meeting, Cllr Rabey thanked the outgoing mayor, Tom Price, for his leadership and “tireless” service over the past year, and pledged her commitment to the town.
She said, “My vision as mayor is simple: to support and champion this town and its people.
“Melksham is rich with history, character and community spirit. I want to build on the fantastic work already done, support our local groups and businesses, encourage collaboration and ensure that everyone feels seen, heard and proud to call Melksham home.”
Each year, the mayor selects charities to raise funds and awareness for. The charities chosen often align with the mayor’s vision, and this year Cllr Rabey has chosen to support Wiltshire and Bath Air Ambulance and FearFree.
She said, “Both organisations do vital work — one providing lifesaving emergency medical support, and the other offering protection and empowerment to those affected by domestic abuse. I encourage everyone to learn more about these charities and, where possible, to support their remarkable efforts.
“These are exciting times for our town. With shared vision, teamwork and the strength of our community, I truly believe the best is yet to come.
“Thank you once again for this incredible honour. Let us now move forward together with purpose, with pride, and with a passion for Melksham’s future.”
Meanwhile, Melksham Without Parish Council has voted to keep the existing chair and vice chair in post for another year, following the annual council meeting on Tuesday 13th May.
Cllr John Glover will remain as the chair, with Cllr David Pafford as the vice chair, both returning to the role with unanimous votes.
