A resident from Melksham is raising money for bone cancer research a decade after she lost her childhood friend to the disease.
Lydia Horler is running an online auction this month and plans to take part in next year’s London Marathon as part of her fundraising efforts.
She will be raising funds for Hannah’s Willberry Wonder Pony Charity, which funds bone cancer research and grants horse-related wishes to seriously ill people.
The charity was set up by Hannah Francis, who was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer, at the age of 17 after falling from her horse. She died shortly after her 18th birthday.
Lydia, who grew up with Hannah through Pony Club, wants to help continue her friend’s legacy.
“She was an incredibly talented horse rider – competitive and so committed. Alongside that, she was such a bubbly character and always had a smile on her face,” said Lydia.
“Hannah’s story is a constant reminder that life can change in an instant, and that we should make the very most of the time we’re given. I feel like I owe so much of the person I’ve become to the perspective Hannah gave me.”
As part of her fundraising, Lydia launched an online auction on Sunday 1st November, featuring prizes including treatments from her rehabilitation business, LHrehab, gym memberships and a holiday to Spain.
She is appealing to local residents and businesses to donate further prizes to help boost the total raised.
The auction runs until Sunday 29th November and can be accessed at https://www.jumblebee.co.uk/bidtogivebonecancertheboot.
Lydia will also run the London Marathon next year in Hannah’s memory.
“Running the London Marathon in her memory, while raising money for the charity she created, is an incredible honour,” she said.
“I know it won’t be easy, but I’ll give it absolutely everything I’ve got. This charity means so much to me, so I’ll be making the most of every opportunity to raise as much money as I possibly can.”
