TWO women from Melksham are set to take on a 100 kilometre walk to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Shelley Davis and Claire Younger will take part in the London 2 Brighton Challenge that will see them try and cover the distance non-stop on Saturday 24th May.
The pair expect the course to take them around 22 hours and have been preparing for the event with long walks around the local area with their longest training effort being 52 miles, equivalent to just over 83k.
Shelley said, “I decided to do this event as I had done the Moonwalk in London twice and wanted to push myself that bit further as I love walking and it seemed a good idea at the time. Then Claire saw I was doing it and joined up and she’s lost so much weight and wanted to get fitter and tone up. She has done a couple of Great North Run events and the Reading Half Marathon, so it’s not our first endurance event.
“Our biggest training walk was 52 miles last week when we walked from 8.30am until 12.20 am except for a half hour lunch break and it was a good opportunity to test our kit for our big night! We have been joined by our friend Sue Georgiou who isn’t joining us on the night, but we just want to say thank you to her for her huge amounts of support – she has been behind us keeping us going on every training walk and we will miss her on the night.
“Myself and Claire are both excited and apprehensive as it gets nearer; we know that half of it is mind over matter and just pushing yourself through the pain. We hope to finish in 22-23 hours all going well and so far I have raised just over £700 for Macmillan Cancer Support whilst Claire has raised £600 – we both aim to raise £1,000.
“This charity is close to our hearts as I for one know how amazing this charity is and how they support people suffering and their family. So please sponsor us as it really does give us a big boost.”
