Melksham & District Young Farmers Club is trying to recruit new members before the decision may be made to close for good.
Helen Darvill, Wiltshire YFC county organiser said, “Melksham & District Young Farmers Clubs was formed in 1937, by the United Dairies milk factory to encourage farming children to rear calves, with competitions and prizes for those achieving the highest standards.
“Over the decades more clubs opened to provide agricultural and social education to its members. Today there are 27,000 members across England, making it one of the largest youth organisations in the world.
“In recent years, Melksham YFC has had difficulty in recruiting volunteers to take on the leadership and encourage membership back up. Over the past 12 months the advisory committee has attempted to gain new members with a recruitment drive, but to little avail.
“Fortunately, current members have continued to enjoy YFC activities, albeit with another club. It is with great regret that, during the club’s 80th year, I must write to inform you that we will be holding a meeting on Thursday 28th September at Owl Lodge, Forest Lane, Lacock, Chippenham, Wiltshire at 7.30pm, to discuss the future and probable closure of Melksham & District Young Farmers Club. We would be more than happy for you to join us and hope to see you there.”
