Melksham now awaits to find out the results of the South West in Bloom judging, which took place on Monday 8th July.
Camilla Bassett-Smith visited the town to judge Melksham’s efforts in the south-west category of the Britain in Bloom competition, which is in its 60th year. The town is determined to go for gold after being awarded gold for four consecutive years between 2018 and 2021.
The display this year has included a centrepiece floral butterfly display that sits on the roundabout in the Market Place, surrounded by a decorative display of flowers. The Melksham Flag Team also designed creative flags which can be seen hanging from the lampposts in the Market Place.
A day before the judging, members of the community also got stuck into helping with the Town Tidy Day, to pick up litter and clean up the streets ahead of Camilla Bassett-Smith’s visit.
Pupils from two local schools, Forest and Sandridge CE Primary School and The Manor School, have also created artwork that is on display at Evie’s Kitchen in King George V Park. Two of the pieces have been sent to Lady Emma Fellowes to be judged as part of the competition.
Although the judges only visited for one day, Melksham’s efforts over the whole year will be taken into consideration.
Bloomer Terri Welch said, “Until we hear the results, the Bloom team will continue looking after the Friends Garden, which was open for the Melksham Open Gardens afternoon on 21st July, watering various planters and, of course, organising the Town Tidy days. The next Tidy Day is Sunday 4th August. Let us hope we get a lovely crowd of people willing to keep our town looking good.
“During the school holidays, we will be looking after the flower troughs that the primary schools have planted, they will be on display in the Friends Garden, being looked after until they go back to schools in the autumn.”
