Proms in the Park is coming to Melksham in September and all residents are invited to come together, bring a picnic and join in with the stirring music of the BBC’s Last Night of the Proms, which will be shown on a large screen.
Melksham Town Council has agreed to screen the free event, the final night of the classical musical festival held at the Royal Albert Hall in London, on Saturday 14th September at Melksham King George V Park.
You don’t have to be a classical music buff to enjoy the night as many people will recognise the much-loved favourites such as ‘Land of Hope and Glory,’ sea songs and ‘Auld Lang Syne. In London, the event generates a festival atmosphere, with some people dressing formally, and the blowing of whistles and waving flags.
People are encouraged to bring their own picnics if they want to, and the park’s cafe, Jack’s Kitchen, will be staying open to provide refreshments.
“It’s an event that we believe passionately that we should be having. We will hopefully have some flags available and it should be a really nice community event that brings everybody together,” said cllr Jennie Westbrook, who put the idea forward at the council’s community development committee meeting last month.
Melksham News asked residents what they thought about the town holding the event. One resident said, “Best idea for Melksham for a long time, and good for the town!”
Other residents have said the idea is ‘amazing’ and ‘brilliant.’
At the full town council meeting on Wednesday 28th May, councillors unanimously voted to allocate an £8,000 budget for the event, including security and a television licence.
