IT’S been a ‘wonderful season’ for Melksham Stags, the town’s mixed-ability rugby team, with five wins out of the six matches played, the club hosting a successful 16-team tournament and three players being selected to play mixed ability international rugby.
“Melksham Stags provides rugby that is totally inclusive of all abilities and is ending the season having won five out of the six matches played,” said coach Jeremy Flower.
“This year, the team also hosted the Bath Foundation Tournament, which brought 16 teams from across the country together to take part in a day of touch rugby and contact rugby.
“We even had Premiership side Saracens come along with a team from their foundation side. Over 500 people came along to support this event, with Newport Dragons winning the contact tournament and Melksham Stags winning the touch tournament.
“This year we also had three players selected to play for the Mixed Ability Rugby International (MARIS) team, in a one-off fixture, which took place in Cork, Ireland. It was a game against Sunday Wells. One of the highlights of the weekend was that one of our players, Fraser Hobin-Bucksey, was named as captain of the MARIS team for the weekend, a great achievement for him and the club. It was at Munster’s ground and is quite an exclusive thing to be part of.
“The season has now come to a close and we look forward to starting training again to prepare for next season at the end of July.”
