A READER who appealed in our last issue for information regarding a spider found in his home has been given the answer to the type of spider he found.
A photograph of the spider was put on Melksham News’ website www.melk shamnews.co.uk where Melksham resident Shaun Croucher saw the image and recognised it to be an orange Marbled Orbweaver spider. The orbweaver is a common builder of spiral wheel-shaped webs often found in gardens, fields and forests. Their common name is taken from the round shape of this typical web.
Orb weavers have eight similar eyes, hairy or spiny legs, and no stridulating organs. The Araneidae family is cosmopolitan, including many well-known large or brightly coloured such as the bright orange one found in Melksham by resident Paul Sunderland.
