A POEM about perfumes and potions, elixirs and tonics – and support tights – has won the D&M Gompels Christmas Poetry competition.
Each year, Gompels, the town centre pharmacy, publish a Christmas poem themselves. However, last year, they asked for Melksham’s budding poets to write their own poem in response.
Over 20 entries were received, with Sylvia Novak’s entry, entitled ‘A Christmas Pharmacopeia’ being chosen as the winner. Sylvia won a selection of essential oils.
“A Christmas poem has been something of a tradition here at Gompels for a few years and this time, we thought we would invite replies,” said Paddy Gompels.
“We had over 20 applicants and some of the poems were absolutely fantastic, which made it really difficult for our judges.
“We’re really grateful to all who took part and we think Sylvia is a very worthy winner. She is a big advocate for the use of poetry for healing.”
Sylvia’s poem can be read below. Sylvia is a local singer/songwriter and has had her poems regularly featured on Wiltshire Radio. She also performed her poetry and songs at Bath Literary Festival in 2011 and Swindon Poetry Festival in 2012.
