Fancy trying something a little different this new year?

Feel like you have two left feet? Why not try out the modern jive class that takes place at the Assembly Hall every Wednesday. 

If jive is not your thing then why not try out ‘Get Strictly Fit’, a ballroom and Latin fitness class that takes place just before! There is something for everyone – no partner needed!

Every Wednesday: Strictly Fit: 6.30-7.15pm, Modern Jive: 8.00-11.00pm. Admission: Modern Jive: £8.00, Strictly Fit: £7.00.

  • Colouring competition winners crowned The winners of the Melksham Seed Swap colouring competition have been unveiled, with the winning entries set to be displayed in the Factory Shop window. The colouring competition is run as part of the Melksham Seed and Plant Swap at the Rachel Fowler Centre, organised by the Pet Food Bank. Organiser Wendy Isaacs said, “We had lots of wonderful entries, and it genuinely was so very difficult to judge. Thank you to all the children who took part; we loved looking at your beautiful artwork.” In the three to five years old category, first place went to Gaby Hippesley, second to Ivy-May Saati, and third to Dorothy Sprules.   • Family’s fundraiser keeps son’s memory alive The family of Melksham teenager Ben Smith, who died nearly three years ago after being assaulted on a night out in Bath, have raised nearly £7,000 for charities that supported them after his death. The funds were raised through a coffee morning last year and a fun football funday held at Oakfield Stadium, home of Melksham Town FC, on Sunday 27th April. Money was raised for The Ben Saunders Foundation, which supports children and young adults with cancer; SmileForJoel, which helps families affected by murder and terrorism; and One Punch UK, which raises awareness about the devastation a single punch can cause. Ben started playing football with Melksham Town FC’s youth team when he was six and continued for many years. The funday is held in honour of Ben’s love of football and featured a match between two teams made up of players who had played alongside Ben and his brother Alex. This year’s winners were Ben’s brother’s team. Following the match, there was live music from the Tin Shack Band, which had children playing tambourines.   • Sparklers raise vital funds for RUHX cancer services A social group in Melksham has raised vital funds for the Royal United Hospital’s cancer appeal at a fun Chocolate Bingo evening. Sparklers raised £542.40 for the RUHX Cancer Appeal, which supports the Dyson Centre at the hospital, which brings together cancer services under one roof, including research, technology, oncology, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. “It was an amazing evening and we would like to thank everybody that came and supported us, either by playing bingo or giving us a donation of chocolate or a donation of money,” said Kay Perry, member of Sparklers, a social group based at the Melksham Baptist Church on Old Broughton Road. The group meets every Monday mornings from 9.30am-11.30am and offers a chance to have a chat and do gentle exercise to music.   • Tree-mendous occasion as Blenheim House celebrates Earth Day The community came together recently for a ceremonial tree planting and hands-on activities in a local care home’s garden to celebrate Earth Day. Residents and staff at Blenheim House, part of the Berkley Care Group, planned the activities to mark Earth Day, celebrated annually on 22nd April. The idea came from the home’s events team, who wanted to create a meaningful time for residents to connect with nature and learn more about the impact of our everyday choices have on the planet. The morning began with an interactive session exploring ecosystems and the importance of recycling. A remote-controlled shark even made an appearance, helping to illustrate the effects of plastic pollution on marine life. Residents were introduced to the concept of the floating plastic islands in the Pacific Ocean and learnt how their own actions, including using the correct recycling bins, could help make a difference.   • Residents step back in time for wartime walk The community stepped back in time recently as part of a World War II walk around Melksham. The Melksham and District Historical Association’s walk was attended by 55 people, including 14 visitors and two new members, and led by chair Paul Carter and secretary Peter Maslen. “We were blessed with lovely weather, and we split into two groups,” explained Paul. “We walked 6,000 steps around some key and former sites in the town. Some of the sites included the town hall, the Picture House, the Cottage Hospital, Avon Rubber, and the war memorial, amongst others. “Refreshments were provided during and after at the Assembly Hall, along with pictures of the time. “Thank you to all those who turned out for what is a relatively new addition to our programme.” Read more on our website, the link is in our bio.
  • More residents forced to use food bank following cost of living rise Melksham’s food bank has seen an increase in the numbers of people using the service following the rise in energy bills. At the start of April, the average annual energy bill for people in England, Scotland and Wales rose by £111, bringing the total to £1,849 per year. The team at the food bank say the rise has impacted Melksham residents, as more people have been referred to use the service in the last two weeks. “The rise in energy bills just makes this worse for people when they are already struggling financially,” explained Kay, a member of the food bank team.   • Melksham Times Past A column about days gone by in Melksham by local historian Lisa Ellis From farm equipment to bicycles to condensed milk By all accounts, William Andrews was a promising engineer/inventor. He had several patents for farm equipment, including a stacking machine. When William Eyres retired from business and sold his Union Iron Works foundry in 1859, two young entrepreneurs went into business together and formed the partnership of Rowland and Andrews and bought the foundry. John Rowland was 25 and William Andrews was 20. Six years later their partnership would be dissolved, with Andrews remaining at the helm. In 1868, Andrews then went about investing quite a bit of money into the business and built a new structure of stone and tile, comprising a large two-storey warehouse and stores, turning and fitting shop, a foundry, a trimming and smiths’ shop, a shed and carpenters’ shop.   • Young model engineer scoops national award An 11-year-old from Melksham has been recognised with a national award for his model train building skills. Oliver Sausins impressed judges at the National Garden Railway Show in Kenilworth, Warwickshire, where he won the Class Winner Award in the Junior section for his model of ‘Britomart’, a Quarry class Hunslet locomotive. “I was so happy,” said Oliver. “Winning was amazing. I spent a lot of time trying to make an engine that would get me 1st place at the junior cup at the 16mm train show – and I managed to win!” Read more on our website, the link is in our bio.
  • New charity takes over Melksham Carers Cafe The future of Melksham’s Carers Cafe has been secured after a new charity stepped in to take over its running. Carers Together Wiltshire has taken on the monthly cafe, which provides unpaid carers with a vital space to socialise and find support. The cafe was at risk of closure after its previous operator, Carer Support Wiltshire, said it could no longer afford to keep it going. Held on the first Friday of each month at the King’s Arms Hotel, the cafe has become a valued community space for carers who often face isolation and stress. Carer Support Wiltshire, a former contractor of Wiltshire Council, had run the café for several years with council funding. However, when the charity became independent last year, the funding stopped, and the contract has now been transferred to Carers Together Wiltshire. Read more on our website, the link is in our bio.
