Local MP Brian Mathew has stepped up a campaign to expand services at Melksham Hospital after raising the issue directly with the Prime Minister in Parliament.
Speaking at Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday 21st January, the MP pressed the Prime Minister on the urgent need to improve access to local healthcare in the Melksham and Devizes constituency.
He highlighted the absence of a Minor Injuries Unit and the growing pressure placed on patients forced to travel to Bath or Swindon for urgent care.
In response, the Prime Minister thanked Dr Mathew for raising the issue and confirmed that he would ensure a meeting takes place with the relevant health minister to discuss concerns and work through how they can be addressed.
Brian Mathew MP said, “Improving services at Melksham Hospital has been a priority for me since the day I was elected because I hear week in, week out from residents who are struggling to access the care they need closer to home. People are being sent miles away for routine appointments, often with poor public transport and long waits adding unnecessary stress.
“Melksham and the surrounding area is growing rapidly, with an ageing population and increasing health needs, yet we still do not have a Minor Injuries Unit and lack key community services that exist elsewhere. That simply is not good enough.”
Since his election in July 2024, the MP has campaigned for improved provision at Melksham Hospital, including the introduction of NHS community audiology and hearing tests, expanded community services and better access to urgent care. He says the Prime Minister’s commitment to ministerial talks marks an important next step.
He added, “I was pleased that the Prime Minister acknowledged these concerns at Prime Minister’s Questions and committed to ensuring I meet with the relevant health minister. This meeting must now lead to real progress, not just warm words.
“I will continue to work with all stakeholders to make sure Melksham gets the healthcare facilities a town of its size and importance deserves.”
