A Melksham bowls player has won the Over 60s national singles title.
Alan George, of Spencer Melksham Bowls Club, competed in the Over 60s Singles Competition at Leamington over two days earlier this month and came away with the national title.
He won four matches, defeating players from Cumbria (21-9), Suffolk (21-19) and Essex (21-20) before facing a competitor from Lincolnshire in the final, winning 22-20 in a closely fought match.
Anne Hutchinson, of Spencer Melksham Bowls Club, said, “The County and National Bowls Competitions all work towards one goal; to ‘get to Leamington’. This is where the finals take place every August. This year, Alan didn’t just ‘get to Leamington’, he won at Leamington!
“Over two extremely hot days, Alan competed in the competition which is the first to 21 shots and can often be a long match in terms, so to play four matches in such hot conditions took tenacity and determination.
“Everyone at the club is immensely proud of his achievements and wish him well for next season as he seeks to defend his title.”
