Melksham’s ladies walking netball team took part in a tournament held in memory of a former player.
The Wiltshire Walking Netball tournament was organised by Corsham Netball Group in memory of Sylvia Higgs, who started playing walking netball with Melksham at Christie Miller in 2016.
When Christie Miller closed, the Melksham sessions moved to Corsham, where Sylvia continued playing until she died from dementia in 2018. Corsham held the first tournament in her memory that year.
Sue Mortimer, member of Melksham Walking Netball, said, “Sylvia Higgs was a lovely lady in her 80s who started playing for Melksham at Christie Miller, at the start of when Wiltshire Council introduced walking netball to the county in 2016. She really enjoyed her playing, especially when she scored!”
This year’s tournament also marked 10 years since Sylvia’s granddaughter, Becca Higgs, started running walking netball sessions at Christie Miller.
The tournament took place on Saturday 26th September, and raised £542.45 for Dementia UK and DKMS UK, a blood cancer charity.
Melksham played six of the 15 matches during the day, winning one, drawing two and losing three.
Calne retained the overall trophy for the second year.
Melksham Walking Netball meets at Melksham Campus in the Sports Hall every Monday from 4pm to 5pm.
Anyone interested in walking netball is welcome to attend.
