PUBLIC bike maintenance stations are to be installed in the town to encourage residents to swap four-wheels for two.
Two units – which equip people with the tools needed to fix, tune and repair the most common mechanical problems with their bikes – will be installed outside the Town Hall and the pavilion in King George V playing field.
It is hoped that the initiative, led by the town council, will encourage more people to use ‘green transport’ and bring more ‘cycling tourists’ to the town, boosting the local economy.
Up to £5,000 has been earmarked for the project, which will cover the purchase and installation of the two units, and a new bike rack for King George V playing field that will accommodate up to five bikes. It is hoped that funding can be obtained from the Melksham Area Board to help cover the cost.
The idea for the bike maintenance stations was suggested by a member of the public to cllr Carl Houghton, who proposed the idea to councillors at a town council meeting last month.
The idea was unanimously supported by councillors, with cllr Sue Mortimer describing the project as a ‘great idea’.
