AFTER a chance meeting, two Armed Forces veterans are proposing to form a group for local ex-service men and women.
Veterans John Heath and Jim Phillips met a few weeks ago at the ‘that meeting space’ Tuesday drop-in session in the Market Place. They quickly connected because of a common bond – they had both served in the Armed Forces.
“That experience has left a deep pride of service and sense of honour in them both,” said a spokesperson for ‘that meeting space’.
“As they chatted, another person joined the in the conversation, quickly establishing that she too had been in the forces. In fact, it transpired that she had served at RAF Compton Bassett at the same time as Jim 60 years ago.
“Sitting there together, they wondered how many others living in Melksham had served in the Armed Forces, possibly some returning after forming ties during their time at RAF Melksham or other local military bases.
John said, “We know that there are groups in nearby towns, but we’d be interested in meeting with others here in Melksham. We could get together and have a bacon butty sandwich, have a game of dominoes or just make friends with people who share a common bond.”
