RIVER Mead school has been given the go-ahead to develop its school grounds and play-space, which includes the development of a multi-functional all-weather activity pitch.
Work has already begun and the facility will be open by the end of May. Headteacher Nicki Henderson said, “This area will have a massive impact on the space available to the children and the quality of their learning in PE.
“The school has a 65% deficit on outside learning space and this excellent new facility will significantly address this shortfall and improve outdoor facilities for our children.
“This development will be completed in three phases. Phase one will include the creation of the MUGA (multi-use games arena), which will be utilised for tennis, netball and five-a-side football, amongst other multi-sports skills. Phase two will see the development of the school entrance area and phase three will enhance some of the playground areas in the school.
“Whilst River Mead School will have exclusive use during the day, it will be available for public use after school hours, light permitting, as there has not been approval for flood lighting.”
The pupils have been blogging their thoughts on the developments. Adam in year six said, “It is going to be pretty awesome having real grass to play on.” Rachel in year six said, “I think it will be good fun. The space will let us run and climb and let off lots of energy.” Kayleigh in year four said, “We are really looking forward to our brand new playground being ready in three months.”
