New Parishioners are flocking to the church

IT has been a successful start to the year for St. Michael and All Angels’ Church in Melksham which has added more services to its timetable, following a growth in the congregation.

“The Sunday morning congregation has doubled in the past two years which has meant that we are nearing capacity in the church,” says rector, Charlie Thomson. “We have multiplied to now having two morning services – one traditional robed communion service with organ hymns at 9am, and a contemporary family praise service with children’s and youth groups at 10:30 – something for everyone!

“Our first week of the new pattern started last month and we had 40% growth on top of regular Sunday attendance.”

The church, based at Canon Square, and has parking available nearby in Church Street Car Park or at the Campus. For more details visit their website – https://www.achurchnearyou.com/ church/9648/

  • Carnival Prince to donate 25 inches of hair for cancer charities

Melksham’s seven-year-old Carnival Prince is set to have 25 inches of his hair cut off on carnival day to support this year’s Carnival Queen fundraising campaign for cancer awareness.

Guy Newman, whose hair currently measures 29 inches, is raising money for CoppaFeel! – a youth-focused breast cancer charity – in honour of Carnival Queen Debbie Holman, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022 and has been fundraising for the charity.

The haircut will take place on the morning of Melksham Carnival, Saturday 5th July, with local salon Libra Hair Studio carrying out the cut. Guy’s hair will also be donated to the Little Princess Trust, which provides real hair wigs to children and young people who have lost their hair due to cancer or other conditions.

  • Melksham defibrillator unavailable in emergency due to council registration error

A defibrillator outside Melksham’s fire station could not be used during a medical emergency earlier this year – because it wasn’t registered on the national system used by ambulance services to locate life-saving equipment. In February, a resident tried to access the defibrillator – which is managed by Melksham Town Council – following a serious medical incident involving a family member. However, when they called 999, South Western Ambulance Service was unable to locate the equipment.

  • Carnival team deliver sweet treats to raise funds for this year’s procession

The Melksham Carnival team raised funds towards this year’s procession recently by providing pre-ordered goodie boxes to families at two local primary schools.

The boxes included fresh scones, cream, jam, tea and strawberries and were distributed on the last day of term at Aloeric Primary School and Bowerhill Primary School.

In total, the scheme raised £170 towards this year’s carnival procession, which is taking place on Saturday 5th July.

Chair of Melksham Carnival Michelle Brightwell said, “It was a rocky start to the day when last-minute illness meant I was left to sell the cream tea boxes at two locations — at the same time — on opposite ends of town.

  • Local primary school boosts Ofsted report to ‘Good’ in all areas

A local primary school has boosted its Ofsted rating and is now rated ‘Good’ in all areas.

The Manor CE Primary School on Ruskin Avenue has received ‘glowing’ praise in its recent Ofsted inspection for every category, including the quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, leadership and management and early years provision.

The rating follows the school’s Ofsted inspection in 2022, which rated the school as ‘requires improvement.’

Headteacher Michael Park said, “We are thrilled that this report reflects the caring and ambitious nature of our school. Thank you to all our pupils and their parents and all our staff; your hard work and dedication make all the difference. We look forward to continuing to work together to provide the best support for all pupils.”

A column about days gone by in Melksham by local historian Lisa Ellis

The Independent Chapel and Women’s Rights in the 1840s

A document I recently transcribed lists the baptisms performed at the Independent Chapel. This record is especially helpful in that, along with baptisms, a lot of them include birth dates - one of the ways I discover which day someone was born.

The following is taken from a Wiltshire Times article published on 9th November 1878 which reports a speech given during the 100-year services and to celebrate their renovations (what we now know to be the Rachel Fowler Centre).

One speaker, Rev. T. Mann, minister in Trowbridge, talked about the Chapel’s origins when he related how Rev. Honywill came to Melksham and how he’d gone on to remain as the minister for the Independent Chapel for almost 60 years. [Honywill and his family lived on King Street in what we now call “Legion House”.]

  • Children learn why money matters at school workshop

Children at Bowerhill Primary School learnt why ‘Money Matters’ at a special finance workshop recently, held for the third year running.

Two members of Thomas Porter Wealth Management ran the session, where the children learnt the difference between credit and debit, how to keep a balance sheet, how to spot a scam, and how to manage financial risk.

Headteacher Chris Light said, “Tom and Becky from Thomas Porter Wealth Management delivered the session, and the children’s new-found skills will be put to use through the ever-popular Legacy Enterprise Project.
