Children joining reception classes across Melksham have received special gift bags filled with learning resources to support their start at school.
Seven primary schools in the Melksham area that are part of the multi-academy trust The White Horse Federation (TWHF) received transition bags to distribute to all new reception pupils. The schools taking part include Forest and Sandridge, Shaw, Seend, The Manor, St Mary’s in Broughton Gifford, Bowerhill and St George’s in Semington.
More than 1,000 bags were distributed across the trust. Each child received a picture book, watercolour painting set, Play-Doh, a wipe-clean handwriting book and dice for games. The books provided are from Mick Inkpen’s Kipper the Dog collection and I Love You to the Moon and Back series by Amelia Hepworth.
Booklets were also created for parents to help them support their children with early learning activities, such as maths skills. The resources aim to encourage creative and exploratory activities for families to enjoy together while building children’s skills and confidence.
Forest and Sandridge principal Scott James said, “Starting school is a significant milestone, and we know that children thrive when schools, families and the wider community work together to help them feel confident, secure and ready to learn.
“All White Horse Federation schools, including those within Melksham, are excited to be able to provide transition bags to all our children starting in reception. They provide families with practical resources and activities to enjoy together while helping children build their confidence and excitement about starting school. We look forward to welcoming our new reception children into our schools as they begin their educational journey.”
