A local primary school welcomed an award-winning author for a special book launch celebration.
Sophie Kirtley visited children at St Mary’s School in Broughton Gifford following the launch of her new book, Swanfall.
During her visit, children were given the opportunity to choose a signed Sophie Kirtley book to take home and enjoy.
Sophie Kirtley said, “I was delighted to share the excitement of my book launch with the children of St Mary’s School. Meeting young readers and chatting with them about the books they love is always such a joy. Kids have the best imaginations and I just love their infectious enthusiasm for stories.”
Swanfall is a wintery tale of swans and magic, inspired both by Irish mythology and the real-life Bewick’s Swans that migrate to UK wetlands each winter.
Sophie’s best-selling books – The Wild Way Home, The Way to Impossible Island and The Haunting of Fortune Farm – have been translated into many languages and selected as top reads for children by the Reading Agency, Booktrust and Waterstones. Her stories are adventures with a mythical, historical twist, inspired in part by her own childhood imaginings in Northern Ireland.
Assistant Principal Mrs Donovan said, “The whole school enjoyed an extra special assembly full of imagination, inspiration and fun.”
Charlotte Godsiffe, a member of the Parent Teacher Association, added, “Sophie’s visit was a wonderful way to start the new term and continue our term of literary celebrations for the opening of a new library.”
