AVON Bowls Club has celebrated the start of the lawn green bowling season and welcomed the mayor, cllr Adrienne Westbrook and Alison Peacock from sponsors, McCarthy & Stone.
Press officer for Avon Bowls Club, Pauline Baker reports, “Now you see them, now you don’t! A couple of months ago, Avon Bowls Club Chairman and President of Bowls Wiltshire Ladies, Dawn Edwards, her husband Colin, Lady Captain, Sylvia Crabbe and Men’s Captain, Malcolm Hole were to be seen supporting Melksham Town in their (sadly unsuccessful) Cup bid, suitably dressed both for the occasion and the weather!
“On 14th April, there they were, in totally different garb celebrating the Lawn Green Bowling season opening at Avon Bowls Club and welcoming Alison Peacock representing our sponsor, McCarthy & Stone, as she unfurled the new flag at the club’s premises in the grounds of Melksham House, while another very welcome guest was the Mayor of Melksham, Adrienne Westbrooke. For once, it didn’t rain! In fact, it became warmer and warmer as the afternoon progressed!
“The Chairman welcomed all the guests and members to the occasion, and following the flag ceremony, the required photographs having been taken, the intention was that members should then play the first match of the season, but unfortunately the recent poor weather left no option but to defer the game until the green was totally ready. Sad, but not altogether surprising.
“However, because the sun was shining the disappointment soon wore off, and members and guests enjoyed the refreshments available throughout the afternoon; there were raffle prizes to be won, stories to be exchanged about how everyone had survived the rotten winter months and smiles all round in expectation of a successful season.
“The next notable occasion will be the club’s annual Open Evening on Tuesday 15th May from 6pm to which all members of the public, mums, dads, kids, grans and grandads are invited to ‘give it a go’!
“This is your chance to try your hand at a terrific sport – no hills, no bunkers, no caddies – just you and a couple of bowls, happily provided by the club, friendly people to help you get to grips with this fascinating game and refreshments. All you need on the 15th is a pair of flat shoes. We will do the rest!
“Further information about the occasion will be on display in the window of the Tourist Information Centre in Church Street from 8th May, or you can telephone 01225 700 782 to discover more. We look forward to welcoming you on the 15th May. Go on! Accept the challenge!”
