Firstly, thank you! It is a true privilege to be the first ever Member of Parliament for the new constituency of Melksham and Devizes.
My promise is to put you first. I am your representative, and I am here to serve you.
Melksham sits at the heart of our constituency and I have been proud to set up my office in the town as I get to work representing all of you – whether you voted for me or not!
I know that, like all rural towns, Melksham has its issues, from the closure of Cooper Tires to inadequate health and dental services and the desperate need for truly affordable housing.
But I also know this is a town full of opportunities and has the people determined to fulfil that. I am ready to help in any way I can and to champion Melksham on the national stage and in Parliament.
I have just passed 100 days in this new role and the real joy has been getting out and about to meet so many wonderful groups and individuals who care for their community and have great insights to pass on.
I am also getting to grips with the House of Commons and its Hogwarts-like corridors! But the main thing is to find the chamber itself and to make your voice heard on behalf of local people and to speak up for the things you said you’d campaign for.
In my maiden speech, I spoke about the need for better rail services, improved health and social care and an extension of services at Melksham Hospital.
One of my first acts having been elected was to write to the Health Secretary about the need for improved facilities at Melksham Hospital. I have already held a meeting with the Friends of Melksham Hospital and will be speaking to the local integrated health board very soon about the need for extended services. I have also taken time to meet with senior leaders at Melksham Oak Community School to discuss the priorities for the school and its students.
I think it is vital for us as MPs to be out there being visible in our community and to that end, I am here for you if you need me. The easiest way to contact me is via email at brian.mathew.mp@parliament.gov.uk.
I am also regularly holding surgeries in Melksham and would be happy to see you there – please just email to book an appointment.
It is the honour of my life to be your MP and I intend to speak up for all of you wherever and whenever I can in the coming months and years.
