TOWN Tidy volunteers have highlighted the dangers of the recreational use of nitrous oxide canisters – commonly known as ‘laughing gas’.
A number of the cannisters and balloons were collected during this month’s Town Tidy event organised by South West in Bloom Melksham.
A spokesperson for the event said, “A good turn out for this month’s Town Tidy, massive thanks to everybody who turned up and good to see some new faces. As usual a lot of litter collected, especially cans and bottles – mainly along the river path and Conigre Mead Nature Reserve and also the highly dangerous nitrous oxide canisters (laughing gas).
“If only the users realised they how detrimental to health they are and the discarded canisters and balloons are dangerous to wildlife.”
The colourless gas is bought in small silver cannisters and is usually inhaled via a balloon. It can make users feel euphoric and relaxed but can also cause hallucinations, dizziness and passing out. In some cases there have been sudden death through lack of oxygen, and the effects of the gas can cause permanent nerve damage.
If you are worried about someone you know who uses nitrous oxide recreationally, call FRANK – the national anti-drug advisory service – on 0300 1236600 for friendly, confidential advice or visit the website: www.talktofrank.com/drug/nitrous-oxide
The next Town Tidy will be on Sunday 4th October from 1-3pm – meet outside the Town Hall for registration.
Organisers say, “Litter pickers, refuse bags and rings will be provided, but please bring your own gloves and any other equipment you may prefer to use.
“Please dress for the weather and working conditions and bring a drink. All ages and abilities welcomed.”
