Orange coffee soda is your mysteriously delicious summer drink

Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what’s going to happen next.

When we say we are just thrilled we mean the ‘just’ in the sense of very, and we also mean the just in the sense of only. In other words there is no other experience of being with you than the thrill of it, the delight of it, the excitement of it. We do not experience exasperation, or impatience, or disappointment, or inadequacy, or sympathy in being your partners. And yet many times we see that you presume or half-expect that we do. And so we begin here by saying to you that the only experience we have as your partners is that of thrill or excitement or joy.

The first aspect of this that is important for you is around your deeply-held stories of what it is like to be with you. And the second important aspect of this opening sentence is around adventure, thrill and excitement. We will come back to that one later.

Even the all-powerful Pointing has no control about the blind texts it is an almost unorthographic life One day however a small line of blind text by the name of Lorem Ipsum decided to leave for the far World of Grammar.

The Big Oxmox advised her not to do so, because there were thousands of bad Commas, wild Question Marks and devious Semikoli, but the Little Blind Text didn’t listen.

Perfect WordPress theme for news and blog

A wonderful serenity has taken possession of my entire soul, like these sweet mornings of spring which I enjoy with my whole heart. I am alone, and feel the charm of existence in this spot, which was created for the bliss of souls like mine.

Core stories, the kind that frame much of a persona for much of a life, don’t just come running to the surface and present themselves the first time you look. No. Your heart needs to be sure over and over and over again that you really mean it when you say that you want to know who you are. And your heart needs to be sure over and over and over again that you will be compassionate when you do see it.

This is not a pursuit that can be done in a night, even though the awareness of it can be gained, in terms of the abstract understanding and the value, in a minute. Seeing the core stories upon which you have built your own persona is the summit, the epitome of personal healing. It can take decades and decades of extremely dedicated observation, and that is okay, because this is your work as much as anything else is worth your investment, if not more.

And so when we offer to you today a core story, a foundational aspect of the scaffolding of your personality, understand the enormity of it. You have earned this not from hard work or being a good girl, but because you have given permission for it in countless ways over and over again. Even when you have believed that a previous permission didn’t work very well. You are wrong about that, blatantly wrong. Every single time you have brought yourself to words or sharing or learning of any kind in the true intention for healing and freedom and joy you have been doing it every time without exception.

But in the same way that projects and wealth and children and writing books for that matter are long-term processes with phases that appear to be difficult or totally unproductive or even regressing they are all necessary steps in an evolution. And to keep on giving permission for wherever that evolution goes is your job. And to make sure that it occurs is ours.

  • Hundreds of hail-damaged cars assessed at Bowerhill dealership

Motorists across Melksham are continuing to deal with the aftermath of a severe hailstorm which caused widespread vehicle damage across the town.

Nortree Motor Company in Bowerhill has been managing a surge in demand after taking on the assessment of around 200 damaged vehicles following the storm in the early hours of 28th May, when hailstones described as being the size of golf balls caused damage to cars, windows and conservatories.

The dealership has been working with specialist hail repair technicians and offering free hail damage assessments for affected vehicle owners, alongside help with insurance claims and repair quotations.

A steady flow of cars with dented bonnets and roofs have been arriving at the forecourt, with around 35 vehicles on site at one point and a further 150 reportedly on a waiting list for assessment and repair.

  • Police investigate after cat’s tail found in garden

Police are investigating after a Melksham resident found what is believed to be her missing cat’s severed tail in her garden.

Jenny Phelps, of Churchill Avenue in Forest, discovered what she believes to be her cat Walty’s tail in her garden on 9th June. The cat has not been seen since and Jenny believes the tail may have been deliberately cut off.

“It was about 7am in the morning. We found his tail but cannot find the cat anywhere,” said Jenny. “I have been up and down the road, people have been out looking for him, but we just don’t know what has happened to him.”

Jenny said she reported the incident to the police and had heard of a similar incident involving another cat in the area.

A column about days gone by in Melksham by local historian Lisa Ellis

One’s scandal to another’s philanthropy

In the last issue, I mentioned a bequest made in the will of Mrs Ludlow Bruges that enabled the purchase of land and construction of a state-of-the-art hospital on Spa Road.

These funds came primarily through US stocks, investments and interest totalling around £198,000; today worth around £17.3M.

Although delighted, people were confused by her generosity. She’d moved to the Channel Islands from Seend and had never had any known links to Melksham Cottage Hospital nor any other Melksham charities. If you were to refer to the plaque pictured in the last issue, you would note a contribution of £100 in 1923 by Mr W Bruges. This was a bequest by William Bruges of Semington with no close tie to the Ludlow Bruges of Seend.

Perhaps her contribution may have had something to do with a notorious scandal in 1881. The hospital benefactor in question, Lisette Henrietta (Hamilton) Ludlow Bruges, was the wife of Richard Ludlow Bruges, Magistrate and Justice of the Peace. He was charged with writing, sending and publishing false, scandalous and defamatory libel about Lady Constance Gladys (Herbert), Countess of Lonsdale.

  • Village centre celebrates opening of new kitchen

A local centre has upgraded its kitchen to professional catering standard following a £15,000 grant from Wiltshire Council.

Seend Centre held a small ceremony last month with villagers and members of the centre’s committee. The chair of the parish council, Debbie Savage, cut the ribbon and declared the kitchen officially open.

Chair of the committee, Karen Cubberley, said, “We are pleased and proud to have used local businesses on this project.”

Local companies that helped with the renovation included Roundstone Catering from Bowerhill and T&S Lux from Berryfield, which carried out the electrical work.

  • Melksham Police Update

I am writing to introduce myself, Charly Chilton, as your Neighbourhood Policing Sergeant for Melksham and Bradford on Avon.

I bring with me over 17 years of policing experience, all of which has been dedicated to frontline uniformed roles across Swindon, Warminster and most recently Trowbridge.

During this time, I have worked within both Response and Neighbourhood Policing teams.

I was promoted to Sergeant in 2020 and was fortunate to return to a Neighbourhood Policing role the following year in Trowbridge. Alongside my core role, I am also a Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) officer and a Police Liaison Officer (PLO), supporting engagement at public protests.

Following a period of maternity leave, I am pleased to have returned and taken up this post, serving the communities of Melksham and Bradford on Avon.

  • Don’t put England flags on lamp posts during World Cup, council warns

Football fans who want to fly England flags from their homes during the World Cup are free to do so but should refrain from hanging them from public railings and lamp posts.

That’s the message from Wiltshire Council as the World Cup gets underway.

And it has pledged to remove flags and banners that are posing a public safety risk.

“With major sporting events such as the World Cup bringing communities together, many residents will want to show their support by displaying England flags and decorations,” said Martin Smith, Wiltshire Council’s cabinet member for highways and street scene.

People’s Emergency Briefing

My love for Melksham this week is for the dedication and drive of the Melksham Environment Group.

Most of the good things in Melksham are kept together by a small handful of people who make things happen and this little group of eco-enthusiasts are no exception.

One impactful project of MEG this week was the screening in Melksham Assembly Hall of the ‘People’s Emergency Briefing’ film led by Chris Packham.

After watching the punchy, powerful summary of the climate concerns facing our country and feeling a little overwhelmed with the scale of it all – I was surprisingly encouraged by the positive optimism of the discussions afterwards. The round tables around the hall came alive with ideas and inspiration and you could feel the energy and possibility that can make things happen with the combined experience, skills and connections of passionate people in Melksham.

  • Scouts take on weekend activity camp

Local Scouts joined other groups from the area recently at a weekend activity camp, where they practised teamwork skills and took part in new challenges.

Over 100 members of Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorer Scouts from Melksham, Bowerhill, Broughton Gifford and Holt took part in the weekend in Liddington.

Highlights included the zip wire, giant swing and raft building, a crate challenge, survivor orienteering and archery. There was also a campfire with storytelling and quiz challenges.

District Lead Volunteer Chris Broom said, “There were seven activity zones to take part in over the weekend. It encouraged everyone to work as a team and gave them the opportunity to try new things.

“We all had a fantastic time. Some of the younger Scouts were asleep within five minutes of leaving the site.”

  • Promising return for Semington driver after lengthy rebuild

Semington driver, Dan Blake, had a promising first appearance of the season, in the Dave Allan Trophy at Castle Combe on Bank Holiday Monday.

He was back in action for only his second meeting since a sizeable crash at Donington Park in September 2023, with the Renault Clio 197 rebuilt by the Amigo Motorsport team over the winter.

Dan used the race as a shakedown for the upgraded car and teamed up with Amigo Motorsport team manager Rob Gaffney, who brought plenty of experience from the Ginetta GT Supercup and Renault Clio Cup. The 33-car field included some big-name machinery with Lamborghinis, Ferraris, Ginettas and BMW M3s all in the mix.
