MELKSHAM could be set to grow by over a 1,400 homes after another housing development was proposed in Shurnhold.
The latest proposal from Gladman Developments is for 275 residential dwellings to be built in Shurnhold on land opposite the former George Ward School on the other side of the A365 Bath Road. The developers are currently consulting before a planning application is submitted.
This means that Melksham has over 1,400 additional homes proposed, with 450 new homes planned for land to the east of Spa Road, 170 new homes in Berrryfield, 255 new homes in Bowerhill plus around 270 homes planned for the George Ward site itself.
The most recent development proposal in Shurnhold is at a community consultation phase with approximately 470 leaflets distributed by Gladman Developments to nearby residential properties and businesses within Melksham. The community will be asked to comment on the first stage of this process, but will be given further opportunity during the planning process.
In their consultation documents the developers say, “The purpose of this consultation is to provide an opportunity for local residents, businesses and organisations to learn about our draft proposals.
“Whilst we fully understand why people may have concerns, they need to be balanced against the requirement to provide much needed new houses, to meet the differing needs of an increasing population and address housing affordability. It is schemes like this that enable younger people and their families, in roles that we rely upon, such as teachers, nurses, police officers etc, to have a suitable home conveniently located for their needs. We all know and accept that more housing is needed and a stance of ‘put it elsewhere’ will result in not enough houses being built. Following this public consultation, we expect to submit a planning application shortly thereafter.”

The public can also have their say on the application from Hallam Land Management and Bloor Homes for 450 homes to land east of Spa Road which will also include a potential extention to the medical centre. A planning application has been received and consultation ends on Friday 12th December.
