MELKSHAM Area Board awarded a number of community grants to local clubs, groups and organisations at their meeting last month.
A total of £21,427 was awarded at the meeting held on Wednesday 24th April. The grants were awarded to the following:
• £600 was awarded to the Great Hinton Memorial Hall to help install a system that automatically closes its fire doors when the alarm is triggered.
• South West in Bloom Melksham was given £1,000 to help towards costs for this year’s Britain in Bloom competition. This year the group will be making flags to erect in the Market Place to mark the 800th anniversary of the granting of a market charter to Melksham.
• Young Melksham was given two grants. £5,000 towards the cost of setting up a drop-in afternoon cafe on Mondays and Wednesdays where secondary school-aged young people can come and enjoy a drink, light snack and access support services if needed. £7,500 was awarded to the cost of renovating the centre’s toilet facilities.
• Enigma Twirl Team was awarded £700 to help towards repairs to their trailer, enabling them to keep performing in local carnivals.
• The Melksham Anniversary Celebration Planning Group, who are organising the celebrations for the 800th anniversary of Melksham’s market charter, were given £1,500 towards the cost of a plaque that will be installed at the Town Hall.
• Melksham Cricket Club was given £977 to cover the cost of materials to install an access pathway to the cricket pavilion, making it accessible to disabled users and parents with prams and buggies.
• £1,900 was awarded to help set up a new short mat bowls club in Melksham. The club will play at Melksham Town Football Club.
• A grant of £1,500 was given to help set up junior parkrun, a free timed 2km course around King George V playing field for children aged 4 to 14.
• Melksham United Church was awarded £750 to help purchase new tables to replace those bought second-hand in the 1960s.
