A sponsored New Testament reading in Christ Church, Shaw, raised over £1,000 for the Benefice of Atworth with Shaw and Whitley.
Money raised will help support local churches within the benefice that have seen a fall in funds due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Churchwarden at St Michael’s, Atworth, Lynne Spencer, reports, “Recently we held a sponsored New Testament reading in Christ Church, Shaw, which involved 20 parishioners reading for either 15 or 30 minutes each from 9am till 6pm.
“We succeeded in reading the four gospels, namely Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, which amazingly meant that we accomplished the feat of reading 89 chapters, 3,779 verses, 82,590 words.
The sponsored New Testament reading is one of many fundraisers organised to support the group of churches.
“During the summer we had a ‘Benefice Giving’ week. which raised over £1,500,” continued Lynne. “It has provided us with much needed money, because due to the pandemic, we like other churches, are having reduced congregation sizes, which sadly means less money. We do not wish to appear mercenary, but we must take care of our treasured listed churches and maintenance and upkeep are not cheap.
“We are also committed to our charity giving, for care for the less fortunate in our society is our Christian duty. We are hopeful that the ‘Auction of Promises’ will also bring in much needed funds.”
