Melksham Rail User Group thank volunteers who have helped them achieve a record number of train journeys in a single day, with passenger numbers increasing year on year.
Graham Ellis, vice chair of Melksham Rail User Group said, “On Tuesday 5th February, Melksham Rail User Group volunteers spoke with almost everyone leaving Melksham by train to learn about their journey to the station so that the group can help inform GWR and others about the next growth stages.
“Passenger numbers have risen from around 3,000 per annum to 75,000 in the last decade and if we get it right, then could rise to 350,000 in the next decade. We recorded over 200 journeys; back in 2012, we would have been busy if we recorded 20. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped, and to the passengers who answered our questions.
“Last year Melksham railway station got longer platforms and longer trains. We’re now running out of car parking and other things will run out too as growth continues.
“The next meeting of the Melksham Rail User Group is on Wednesday 20th March from 7.30pm at the Town Hall, all welcome. Or see the website at www.mrug.org.uk or find us on Facebook.
“Trains now call at Melksham up to 18 times per day, with 9 services to Chippenham and Swindon, and 9 to Trowbridge and Westbury.”
