POLICE in Melksham have stepped up patrols in the town following increased concerns by the public about anti-social behaviour in the town centre.
Local people have expressed concerns regarding the behaviour a particular group of people who regularly hang around in the town centre, especially now as reports of them begging in the town have been made.
Melksham Police has assured local people that they are aware of problems with anti-social behaviour in the town and offered advice to anyone approached by individuals asking for money.
Community coordinator, Alex Trombetta said, “The local Community Policing Team is aware of the ongoing issue of anti-social behaviour in Melksham town centre and will be working closely with local businesses to obtain statements in relation to any incidents.
“This will help us build a clearer picture of the problem and how best to tackle it. We have also increased visibility patrols in the area to act as a deterrent to anyone engaging in this type of behaviour, as well as providing reassure to the local community.
“We would urge anyone who is approached by individuals who are begging, to not hand over any money. We will be dealing with anyone we see begging in the town centre. These people are not homeless – those who are in need will be sign-posted to the relevant charities or agencies.”
